Antigen/Gene or Protein Targets Calcitonin
Reactivity Avian and FIsh
Relevance Calcitonin is a 32 amino acid peptide hormone secreted by parafollicular cells (also known as C cells) of the thyroid gland in humans, and in many other animals in the ultimopharyngeal body. It acts to reduce blood calcium (Ca2+), opposing the effects of parathyroid hormone (PTH). Calcitonic participates in calcium (Ca2+) and phosphorus metabolism. It also possesses potent hypocalcemic activity resulting from the suppression of osteoclastic activity. In lower vertebrates, calcitonin may be most important during periods of physiological stress that may include, for example, the osmotic and mineral challenges of a fish returning to the sea after spawning or the mineral stresses associated with an egg-laying cycle or pregnancy and lactation in mammals.

It is a useful health marker.
Host Rabbit
Immunogen Ovalbumin-conjugated synthetic peptide. Peptide immunogen is conserved in all fish & bird species.
