Relevance S-100 protein is an acidic protein antigen present on certain cells and useful as a marker in anatomic pathology.

The name is derived from the fact that the protein is 100% soluble in ammonium sulfate at neutral pH. The protein binds calcium and is structurally similar to calmodulin. The function of S-100 is unknown.

S-100 is normally present in cells derived from the neural crest (Schwann cells, melanocytes, and glial cells), chondrocytes, adipocytes, myoepithelial cells, macrophages, Langerhans cells, and dendritic cells. It may be present in some breast epithelial cells.
