Relevance | Interferons (IFNs) were originally identified as proteins that induce an antiviral state in cells, but they also have important regulatory functions in the immune system. Type I IFN (predominantly IFN-α and IFN-β) and type II IFN (IFN-γ) play critical roles in innate and adaptive immune response against viral infection in mammals. Unlike mammals fish have two type II interferons, IFN-γ and IFN-γ-related (IFN-γrel). IFN-γ and IFN-γrel have recently been shown to play a role in protecting particular species of fish against infection by pathogens such as infectious pancreatic necrosis virus (IPNV) and salmonid alphavirus 3 (SAV3). VAB4P2B4*E8 can be used to study IFN-γrel in Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) and Brown trout (Salmo trutta). |
