Relevance Cluster of differentiation 22 (CD22) is a sugar binding transmembrane protein belonging to the SIGLEC family of lectins, found on the surface of mature B cells and on some immature B cells. It acts as by preventing over activation of the immune system and the development of autoimmune diseases. CD22 which binds specifically to sialic acid with its N terminal immunoglobulin domain, is a member of the immunoglobulin superfamily due to the presence of Ig domains. CD22 function’s as an inhibitory receptor for B cell receptor signalling and is also involved in the B cell trafficking to Peyer's patches in mice.
