Lymphatic filariasis, caused by Brugia malayi and others, affects more than 120 million people worldwide causing major public health problems especially in the tropics. Brugia malayi - ALT-2 protein is abundantly synthesized in the infective stages of the parasite and believed to play a major role in the transmission and infectivity of the filarial parasite. Bm-alt-2 has several important characteristics of a vaccine candidate. These include high levels of expression in the infective larval stages presenting as an abundant target for the immune system and more importantly there is no known homolog in the mammalian species. |
