Relevance Integrins are heterodimeric cell surface receptors composed of a and ß subunits, which mediate cell-cell and cell-extracellular matrix attachments. Aberrant integrin expression has been found in many epithelial tumours. Changes in integrin expression have been shown to be important for the growth and early metastatic capacity of melanoma cells. Integrin a2b (CD41) and integrin ß3 (CD61) associate to form the heterodimer integrin a2bb3 (CD41/CD61; GPIIb/IIIa), a fibronectin receptor expressed in platelets. P256 has potential use for imaging of thrombi. P256 induces aggregation of normal platelets in plasma.
