Relevance Cytochrome P450, family 4, subfamily V, polypeptide 2 (CYP4V2) encodes a member of the cytochrome P450 superfamily of enzymes that are a group of heme-thiolate monooxygenases. Cytochromes P450 catalyze many reactions involved in drug metabolism and synthesis of cholesterol, steroids and other lipids. CYP4V2 catalyzes the omega-hydroxylation of medium-chain saturated fatty acids such as laurate, myristate and palmitate in an NADPH-dependent pathway. CYP4V2 may have a role in fatty acid and steroid metabolism in the eye and its mutations are associated with Bietti's crystalline dystrophy (BCD) and retinitis pigmentosas.
