Relevance DJ-1 is a broadly conserved protein among both prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells. It has been identified as playing a diverse role in a range of cellular processes. DJ-1 was originally proposed to be a pro-oncogene, and has since been shown to be expressed at varying levels in breast, non-small cell lung and prostate cancer. It has been demonstrated to paly a role in the regulation of RNA-binding proteins as well as the regulation of testicular androgen receptors and fertilization. In addition, mutations in DJ-1 have been linked to autosomal recessive early-onset familial Parkinson's disease, and have been shown to be a key component of the oxidative stress and ubiquitin-proteasome system response (see Hod, 2004 PMID: 15258905 for additional details).
