| Notes | Influenza A virus, which belongs to the Orthomyxoviridae family, is a negative strand RNA virus and one of the rare RNA viruses to replicate in the nucleus. One of the viral proteins encoded by this virus is the non-structural protein 1 (NS1) which is essential for viral replication. It is a multifunctional protein that interacts with both RNA and host proteins. NS1 can reduce host translation by inhibiting the nuclear export of mature cellular mRNA via its interaction with the poly A tail. It also inhibits mRNA splicing by binding to the U6 small nuclear RNA. In addition, NS1 inhibits the antiviral activity of the interferon-induced pathway by binding to double-stranded RNAs that are generated during viral replication. |
