Notes Carcinoembryonic antigen-related cell adhesion molecule 21 (CEACAM21) is a member of the CEA gene family and thus part of the immunoglobulin (Ig) superfamily. The CEACAM21 gene codes for both the CEACAM3 and CEACAM21 proteins and is located on chromosome 19. The mature protein is highly glycosylated and contains a single IgV-like domain, common to all members of the CEACAM family, followed by one IgC2-like domain (1).

CEACAM21 is thought to be a primate-specific, and to date, no orthologs have been identified in lower species (2). The function of the CEACAM21 protein still has to be elucidated but it has been described to be overexpressed in heavy smokers (3) and is associated with COPD susceptibility (4).
